Taste and See

Sit and taste

John 6: 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

We are taught the story of the miracle of the fishes and loaves at an early age. Sometimes I think we learn these bible stories and as we get older, they are too familiar to us. We take them for granted. We lose some of the “wonderment” of who God truly is. In this account, Jesus tells the disciples to tell the crowds to “sit” in preparation to receive the blessing (food). From only 5 loaves and 2 fish, everyone who was “seated” ate as much as they wanted. It’s a small detail, but is there a significance to the fact that Jesus asked them to “sit”, and then they received something because they obeyed? If there is, that could mean that when we do not listen to God, we could be missing his blessing.

It seems like a small command, to “sit”. It also is noticeable that those who “sat”, got to eat.

Can you image how the crowd was anticipating Jesus? To even be in the presence of the Lord? Most were following him because of the healings and miracles that He performed. So, to be told to “sit” and wait to receive something, must have been exciting. It stands to reason that most of the people who did partake, didn’t know exactly where the food came from. Many did not realize that it was indeed a miracle from Jesus, but they enjoyed and anticipated words from Jesus.

Lord, let us never miss the real miracles. Help us to see all that you do and have for us. Help me, Lord, to hear and obey, because I do not want to miss a blessing!! Amen                                                   Shirlene Peterson
